Clinical preceptors volunteer their skills and expertise to guide medical and pharmacy students in providing safe and appropriate care to all the NEOMED free clinic patients. While the students play an integral role in the initial assessment of the patient, the clinical preceptor assumes responsibility for the medical care rendered to each patient.

Volunteering at the NEOMED Free Clinic allows clinical preceptors the opportunity to mentor and teach in an interprofessional environment with student teams that consist of varying degrees of clinical experience.

Clinical preceptors need to have a valid unrestricted Ohio medical license, an interest in medical education, and manage common primary care adult conditions. An orientation and onboarding process must be completed at least one week before volunteering at the Free Clinic.

NEOMED faculty have insurance through NEOMED. Other volunteers are strongly encouraged to either apply for a faculty position or check with their own insurance carrier or employer. For further assistance, do not hesitate to contact the Free Clinic.

Preceptors that offer specialty services may have follow up when necessary. Primary care clinical preceptors can expect the clerkship students and director to manage lab results and communicate with patients after their visit.

Clinical Preceptors are expected to arrive by 8:30 a.m. when the first appointment is offered. The last patient is scheduled at 11 a.m. Please keep in mind the student volunteers often take 90-120 minutes to complete a visit depending upon the complexity of the case and experience of the student team.

Medical students discuss cases with two preceptors at the NEOMED Free Clinic.
