The Experiential Education Program is where classroom learning meets real-world pharmacy practice. Over three years, you’ll move from Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) to Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). Along the way, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in class to real patient care settings. Guided by preceptors, you’ll gain hands-on training and the confidence you need to succeed as a practicing pharmacist.
Program opportunities
Second-Year (P2) Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE)
The P2 Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) is designed to give the student experience in filling and dispensing prescriptions. The focus of these visits is on “medication use systems.” The student will take part in the prescription dispensing process, build skills in counseling patients on over-the-counter products and learn about the challenges of providing medications to underserved patients.
The P2 IPPEs begin in the fall and continue through the second year of the professional curriculum. The student will complete three rotations: two one-week community blocks and one two-week institutional block. Each rotation week is a full 40 hours.

Third-Year (P3) Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE)
The P3 Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) focuses on patient safety and helps the student understand the processes and systems that support positive medication outcomes. During these rotations, the student will take part in monitoring medication safety, identifying quality improvements, learning drug therapy monitoring parameters, understanding legal and regulatory requirements, and counseling patients.
Like the P2 IPPEs, the P3 IPPEs begin in the fall and run through the third year of the professional curriculum. The student will complete three rotations: two one-week community blocks and one two-week institutional block. Each rotation week is a full 40 hours.

Fourth Year (P4) Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE)
Beginning in June of the fourth year, the student completes nine months of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). The theme of these rotations is “patient-centered care.” The student builds on classroom learning and earlier practice experiences to apply skills in direct patient care activities.
The monthly rotations include:
- Ambulatory care (two months)
- Inpatient / Acute Care General Medicine (two months)
- Community Pharmacy
- Hospital / Health-System Pharmacy
- Clinical Selective
- Underserved
- Elective
Become a Preceptor
Much of the success of the student’s experiential education is dependent upon qualified pharmacists to serve as preceptors in the filed at many unique rotation sites focused on specialties in advanced pharmacy practice.
Preceptor Training
In order to precept students from the College of Pharmacy, pharmacists need to complete our preceptor training program.
